Pressestimmen

“Debut novelist Zappia presents readers with a wholly unreliable narrator, [but] the characters all seem authentic, thanks to Zappia’s careful attention to detail.” (Booklist)“Alex is a funny, touching, determined, and smart character, and her story is complex and interesting. Fans of E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars and Matthew Quick’s Silver Linings Playbook will immerse themselves in this nuanced look at trying to live a “normal” life while coping with mental illness.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“The storytelling texture here recalls Andrew Smith and Sean Beaudoin…There are moments of genuine tragedy redeemed by the acceptance Miles and Alex find in each other amidst all of their imperfections; if love doesn’t conquer all, it certainly makes the battles easier to bear. Readers…will enjoy this quirky trip.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Alex’s sardonic voice and the rapid, Heathers-like dialogue will hold readers’ interest.” (Publishers Weekly)

Just like "Eliza and her Monsters", "Made You Up" is a well written novel with interesting characters and an intriguing idea.I really liked the protagonist and, in contrast to other YA books I've read, her relationship with her love interest is rather well developed. The characters that didn't seem all that well-rounded were, just like in "Eliza and her Monsters", the grown-ups in the story. Alex's parents, especially her mother, don't come across as very good at being a parent and the therapist is rather one-note and off-putting as well. The overall plot was really interesting, even though it was somewhat crowded towards the end, in my opinion, with everything just piling on, but I liked the novels flow and Alex's narrative voice was really easy to follow along.I cannot speak to how accurate the depiction of Alex's condition is, but I'm afraid that Zappia's depiction of mental health centers and experts, especially towards the end of the novel, is rather off-putting and, hopefully, not accurate.Overall, I loved the writing, the characters, and, for the most part, the plot of "Made You Up" even though there are some weaknesses in the depiction of the grown-up and professional characters.

What an amazing book, leaving me speechless with its gut-wrenching twists and turns, teetering on the edge of my chair, trying to figure out what I could believe and what I couldn't.In the beginning it came on a little too strong and I was just about to grumble about yet another inclusion of monster Nazis that Americans seem to love so much. Well, I'm German, so I never understood why people would include them into games and movies alongside vampires, turning them into some mythical creatures or so - but never mind, this story actually turned around really quickly and gave a very sensible approach to that topic, hitting all the right notes. And not only in that regard, everything came together just beautifully. Every strand of the story culminated in something fantastic and when everything unravelled I had to take a break, just to let that twist sink in. This is a masterful book, absolutely fantastic, that not only deals with schizophrenia in a great humanising way, but also told a thrillfull story along it.One thing I particularly liked that although, this was Alex' story, the other characters were just as solid and had their own story arcs not just centralised around her. Thanks for this book - it is for now the reading highlight of the year.

Wunderschöne Geschichte, in einem Zug durchgelesen.Daumen hoch, den Preis definitiv wert.leichtes englisch, hatte keine probleme während des Lesens.

I. Loved. This. Book. It was absolutely brilliant. Definitely a new favorite of mine. This book was perfection and everyone should read it! Now stop reading this freaking review and just order this amazing book!

A great read with a suprising twist! For everyone who likes young adult stories but wants it to be about more than cliques and a love story.

This is a very beautiful debut novel by Francesca Zappia. It was also refreshingly unusual. Due to the unreliable narrator that is Alex we don't know at all times what is real and what isn't.I really liked Alex and Miles, even though it took some time.At first glance, they are quite rude people. But this book is written so addictively, that I turned page after page to unveil the mystery and at the same time they soften up. And yes, there is also some sort of mystery in this book, though, to be honest, I thought it was far fetched and didn't really make sense. Especially at the ending and the circumstances Alex was in at the graduation. Those circumstances don't happen anymore, that was ridiculous. The romance between Miles and Alex was very sweet but the focus wasn't to heavy on them luckily. I love how it gradually happened and I loved to read about their pranks, they were very funny.Overall, this book is very much recommended by me!

"Made You Up" konnte mich bis auf einige Abstriche fast vollends überzeugen.
